Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve written in a blog. It’s embarrassing for me to say, but I used to keep some form of a blog since high school (Xanga, anyone?) up until about five years ago. Back then, I was a bit more comfortable writing (and with words in general) but now that it’s been so long, I feel quite awkward and vulnerable and don’t really know where to begin.
Lately, I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with social media (don’t we all?) and finally decided to delete Instagram on my phone. I genuinely love and enjoy seeing updates from my friends, but I’ve noticed that in the past few months or maybe even longer, I’ve been struggling with more negative thoughts than positive ones. Not just as an illustrator, but especially as a first-time parent navigating all of the content and resources and babygrams out there, I can’t help but feel that it just isn’t a healthy space for me right now. (Disclaimer: I can only say this for myself! I know that it can be a very useful tool for artists and parents alike.) So, while I plan on occasionally popping in via web browser, I’ll mostly be laying low there in 2022.
The question, then, is how/where do I share my artwork + a slice of life in a space that I feel more safe to explore? It was, and is, still important to me to share those parts of myself, especially this new year. I love what Sha’an (@furrylittlepeach) says about viewing resolutions as questions you’re answering throughout the year. I suppose this blog is one answer to the many questions I have about making work, pushing through creative blocks, quieting the self-critic, and sharing content in the midst of it all. So welcome to this small corner of the internet! Thanks for joining me. Here, I’ll be posting works in progress, finished pieces, random things that inspire me, and as mentioned earlier, a slice of my daily life. I hope you can make yourself at home. What are some of your resolutions or questions/solutions this year?
